This will be a fun, fun service everybody! Basically, you will be ushers for a play. You direct people where to sit. But when the play starts you get to watch the whole play while earning hours at the same time! And the plays are amazing and really professional. The theater is a beautiful place! CHINESE AMERICAN MUSEUM

CHINESE AMERICAN MUSEUM 
Lantern Festival 

Date: March 2nd, 2012
Time: Shift 1:  9am-1pm
Shift 2: 1pm-5pm
Shift 3: 5pm-8pm

Each year, Lantern Festival spotlights a Chinese American re-creation of a traditional village street fair featuring brilliant lantern displays, exciting musical, acrobatic and lion dance performances, enriching arts and crafts booths, and to cap off the evening,and to cap off the evening, a spirited glow-in-the-dark silver dragon stage performance to delight our senses!  Event-goers can try their hand at lantern-making, Chinese-opera style face painting, kite-building, Chinese paper-cutting, Origami, Chinese calligraphy, string-knotting, and much more! New program features are added to the event each year to keep the festival fresh and exciting for new and returning visitors.

REMEMBER TO LEAVE YOUR T-SHIRT SIZE! 

Responsibilities/Positions include:

SET UP:  Set up and decorate booths and venue
HOSPITALITY:  Set up, organize and maintain food and refreshments for staff, volunteers and performers
STAGE MANAGEMENT:  Assist staff with the set up and take down of props between stage performances 
PROGRAM RUNNER:  Distribute programs and surveys to event-goers.  Encourage booths and museum attendance
BOOTH COUNTERS:  Count/record booth visitors using a hand-counter
ARTS N’ CRAFTS:  Assist artists/instructors in a variety of activity booths such as lantern-making, kite-making, calligraphy, face painting, origami, photo booth, etc.  
INFO BOOTHS:  Set up and assist at registration tables for volunteers/artists/entertainers/media 
CLEAN UP:  Break down booth and venue decorations and general area clean-up

March Leadership Committee

This service is brought to you guys by March's Leadership Committee. The hope for this challenge is to encourage and reward people of all ages to strive to improve their physical fitness and learn about worthy causes taking place in their communities. We will most likely be setting up for this event and be volunteering at the registration booths.

Complete Hours Update as of 10/28/12

Here are the updated hours. EVERYTHING is up to date EXCEPT the LA Half-Marathon. Those hours will be updated by this Wednesday, promise.

New members, only the hours you get AFTER the summer will be put on here since the summer hours and semester 1 hours are two different things. Now that you've completed the summer hours, they will be compiled in a different excel file that WILL count for your cumulative hours. But for now, you need to worry about the 10 hours requirement by the end of this semester!

Old members, remember to complete your 20 hours requirement by the end of this semester!

2012-2013 NHS Guidelines

I thought this post would be helpful to you all because this is what cabinet expects from you because you are a part of NHS.


1. The Four Pillars:
Members are to abide by these four pillars as members of NHS:
  • Leadership: Leadership is not completely about being on cabinet or being in Leadership Committee (LC). Contrary to what many people believe, you can lead without being loud or being a "natural born leader." Every service offers members a leadership opportunity if cabinet members or LC members are not available. All you have to do is take the initiative to keep yourself busy. Whether it is the small task of just picking up trash or going around to ask other coordinators if they need help, these small things show your leadership because you earn followers by starting an action.
  • Scholarship: Being a successful scholar is essential to being a successful member. The pillar of scholarship not only applies to a student's academics, but also to a student's array of knowledge and consciousness. It is important for an NHS member to be keen and understanding. Showing a commitment for scholarship implies qualities of diligence and determination. NHS encourages you to be an intellectual who can make well-informed decisions, which in turn will contribute to the overall well-being of the club and its members.
  • Character: High standards are expected from the members of NHS. There are two ways to show character: by showing moral and ethnic qualities and by volunteering.  By showing character you are representing the club as it is, a National Honor Society.  During services we expect to see the qualities of honesty, respect, and courage. Attending services not just for the hours, but out of the kindness of your heart and your passion to help the community. You do the things that are ethical and honorable. Not only do we expect our members to apply this to services, we expect them to show character wherever they go.
  • Service: As an NHS member, you are required to be involved in activities outside of school. NHS gives you the opportunity to reach out to the community through a variety of services. Demonstrating the pillar of service means showing a sincere effort to stay on task and help others. Our primary purpose is to guide you in seeing beyond the “hours” that you gain so that you can comprehend and take part in the concerns of the world around you. Hopefully, you will benefit from your interactions with other people, receive a rewarding experience, and realize that you can make an impact by contributing to a worthy cause.
2. Applications:
  • Officers do read all your applications.
  • Please put an effort into writing your responses. If your response is not up to par, we will ask you to redo your application.
  • No late applications will be tolerated. There will be consequences for late applicants. 
3. Services:
  • Officers provide a certain number of services per month; however, you do not need to rely solely on us for services. 
  • Each semester, members are required to completed 20 hours in order to stay as an active member. 10 hours can be from outside services, but 10 must be from NHS. The exceptions to this rule is New Members and 2nd Semester Senior Year.
  • New Members and 2nd Semester Senior Year, members are required to complete 10 hours. 5 hours can be from outside services, but 5 must be from NHS. The hours new members  complete to join NHS will not be part of the 10 hours required for that semester. 
4. Rides:
  •  It is not the officers' responsibility to help members find rides to services. 
  • Please do not sign up for a service until you are sure that you have a ride or that you have made carpool arrangements with other members.
  • We understand that giving rides to services is hard for members, but if you do ask for a ride, please remember to return the favor.


5. Probation:
  • Members are expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA (unweighted) every semester, complete the required number of hours (20 for returning members, 10 for new members), and demonstrate exemplary behavior.
  • Any member who fails to meet the requirements will be given a warning notice. If member does not improve within one quarter, the student will be subject to further disciplinary actions, which may include dismissal from the club.
  •  Any member who goes on probation will not receive a stole at graduation and will not be permitted to run for any positions on the NHS cabinet.
6. Meetings:
  • NHS Meetings are typically the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month in the Multipurpose room. If there are changes, we will try to notify members through blogspot side bar on the right side of the screen, facebook group, email list, and school bulletin.
  • Meetings are held to inform the club about club events.
  • Sign-ins will be at the beginning of each meeting.
  • Members are expected to attend at least 1 meeting per month. 
7. Fundraisers:
  •  Fundraisers are planned out for the benefit of its members.
  • All proceeds goes to buying stoles, lowering the cost of jackets, sweaters and T-shirts and socials.
  • Participation is extremely important in fundraisers and if members fail to participate then it will be the members who will lose out on the wonderful benefits.
8. Socials:
  • NHS socials are optional, but we encourage members to participate. The club bonds through games and icebreakers, and you are given the opportunity to become familiar with other members.o
  • Going to a social will also give you no hours, but this should not discourage you guys from participating. Take the time to acquaint yourself with people who share the same drive to improve the community and the same strive for academic achievement.

9. Graduation:
  • Members who complete 5 consecutive semesters of service without being placed on probation.
  • These graduates receive a stole at the Senior Awards Night hosted by the school in May.
  • Members who did not attend Senior Awards Night may pick up their stole at Mrs. Keller's Room (SA8).
  • Graduates wear these stoles during graduation in the honor of NHS and all of their dedication throughout high school.
